Welcome to the 5th Grade!

Welcome to Wellstone's fifth grade!    Our team of teachers consists of Ms. Borman, Ms. Ewald, Sra. Ramirez, and Mrs. Pantoja, with Mrs. Steigauf as our ELL teacher. 

This fall our fifth graders have been learning about many different things.  In math, we have covered topics such as geometry, number theory, place value, and various math algorithms (review of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponents, square numbers and algebraic equations).  In reading, we have been working through the district's new curriculum called MONDO.  We continue to do readers workshop and meet with groups of students on rotations, to target their specific reading needs, as they work in groups and individually, therefore learning from the teacher, each other, and on their own.  This new curriculum provides rich texts and read alouds challenging the students to immerse in higher thinking and apply reading strategies.  In writing, students have worked on reflective writing, mostly about themselves and pieces such as a book about themselves and/or autobiographies.  We are now beginning the memoir unit, which is an engaging and reflective writing style and writing piece as well.  Another content aspect we cover in writing has been and continues to be the "Answer Sandwich" style as a way of displaying good writing consisting of a topic sentence, detail sentences, and a concluding sentence, for paragraphs. 

The fifth grade will be going on a field trip to Valley Branch in November where the students will be doing mostly fun and educational outdoor activities.  This has been a successful field trip in the past and students eager look forward to it each year. 

We have visited the Como Park Elementary Planeterium where we learned about the moon, and will again visit it in the spring, to learn about the planet and solar system.

Fall Conferences:  November 11-12 (evening: 5pm-8pm) and day conferences on November 13.Our daily schedule:

9:00 - 9:15  Arrival to class & Breakfast in the classroom

9:15 - 10:05 Class time

10:05 - 10:55 Prep time: The Specialist Classes this year are Swimming, Science, Phy. Ed., Music, and Enrichment.  Students will rotate among the Specialists on an "A" or "B" day schedule, seeing two Specialists at a time, for 6 weeks.

10:55 - 12:20 Class time

12:20 - 12:50 Lunch

12:50 - 1:10 Recess

1:10 - 3:30 Class time
